MessageI had heard of UTube but only connected to it last month when looking for info on a singer and came across Matt Monro who is my favourite singer. I can't get enough of his voice or his songs!

My all time favourite is "Walk Away". I can see why the Austrian contest song caught Monro's ear, and I quote from his on-line biography... At the Eurovision Song Contest, singing "I Love the Little Things," he finished second behind Italy's 16-year-old Gigliola Cinquetti), despite what author and historian John Kennedy O'Connor describes in his book The Eurovision Song Contest - The Official History as an "excellent performance of the only English language song of the night."[3]. The Austrian entry "Warum Nur Warum" caught Monro's ear, despite its sixth-place finish, and he recorded an English version titled "Walk Away," Don Black, started his career as a renowned songwriter when Monro challenged him to pen the English lyric that became "Walk Away."...... unquote.

I'm glad he did, as this is my all time favourite, and not just the song, the instrumental music that accompany's it is fantastic!

He lives on in his music and our memories!

MessageI was sat listening to "We're Gonna Change the World" this morning over breakfast and it reminded me just how much I liked Matts songs. What a fantastic voice he had, and he could actually sing, unlike Sinatra who talked through alot of his stuff.Change the world is such a catchy up beat song it sets you up for the day like nothing else, and yet Matt could also do the soft, gentle, romantic and powerful stuff. Only one word sums him up Perfection
Take Care.

MessageHi All..Matt Monro what a voice!
I am 50 years old,and remember a few of the great ones songs.
But a few weeks ago they all came flooding back to me. As time goes by you get into other music, but after hearing (From Russia with love) played to 76.000 fans at Old Trafford after the game, against Barcelona that put Manchester United into the Champions League Final in Moscow.
It was great to here that song again, but it seemed to meen a hell of a lot more, this time around! So i am giving all the songs plenty of play time now! one of the best i think has to be (Walk Away) oh and by the way, Moscow is well worth a visit!

get the recognition he deserved his untimely death didn't help, do you think he might have been held back because he was a

MessageHi everyone,

I'm another of many Matt Monro Fans. I recentley dedicated a song to him at one of my charity concerts. Little did I know it was being filmed by someone in the audience and then placed onto you tube and google video.

I generally sing Sinatra songs but loved Matt's voice and his songs too.

It's worth a look and please feel free to email me and I can send you the link.

Grateful for any feedback.

Kind regards

Vince

MessageMatt Monro, is my favourite singer although I’m a jazz and blues man. I have just picked up a 3 box set of Matt Monro from a friend of mine, so my Matt Monro collection is complete. I seen a documentary on the TV and it showed a professional singer not like the stuff you get today, I wish Matt’s family all the best and Matt Monro is the best singer out of the UK, I miss him very much. MessageMatt is truly fascinating let alone the songs which have withstood the test and passing of the time. His melodious and cool and enchanting voice has enamoured people from his generation to now,his songs having become the staples of lovers and dreamers and simply the condiments to any relaxing moments. I have been singing his songs even before the advent of the Karaokes. I just felt very sorry for this gentle soul whose weakness with drinking and cigarettes took him prematurely from this mortal probation. He lives though with his songs that have become immortal and timeless

Matt himself would have been very proud of his son, I have tried to find a web site for Matt Junior and have not as yet had any luck. I know Matt Junior takes his show out to Singapore and the Phillipines soon and would love to find out if he has a fan club of his own, so if anybody out there knows anything PLEASE get in touch, who knows maybe even Matt Junior himself might see this and get in touch, I hope so. I find myself listening to his music and Matt, JR's. In this day of "alternate & rap crap" music, Matt's songs are timeless and hopefully, someday, our world will once again embrace the kind of music Matt enjoyed singing. We enjoy listening to them. MessageIt was only a couple of months ago that I found out that Matt Monroe has been gone since 1985. I was shocked and saddened. One of my very favorite vocalists had died earlier this year---the oh-so-great Frankie Laine---who, along with Nat King Cole and perhaps a couple others...Mario Lanza....Marty Robins...were the guys I could listen to over and over again. Matt Monroe was up right there with the very best of them. The range and clarity of his voice always amazed me. Now when I listen to one of his albums, I will do so with an even greater appreciation of the treasure he left behind.

MessageI suppose I stand corrected on the issue of Matt's Death. But I based my commentary on what was written in biography on this site, the photos featuring him with a cigarette or drink in hand also featured on this site, and on the commentary of a guestbook contributor who claimed he even lit up a cigarette during his last performance (Doesn't sound professional to me, so I'll view that with a grain of salt). Clearly, the smoking and drinking didn't help his condition and it's still a shame he died so young.
I only vaguely recall hearing a warm, sage-like voice that may have been his during my childhood in the '70s. It's a pity my generation couldn't have known him better.

MessageI recently viewed and recorded the 1965 British rock promo film, "Pop Gear" during its airing on the Flix cable channel. Matt was featured it, of course-the dramatic principle and elder statesman among the younger acts who had varying degrees of staying power in the music industry. I've kept rewinding the end where he sings the theme song and his baritone glides effortlessly over the bouncy rock beat. He seemed to have had a lot of fun with that, although I know the performances were all lip-synced.Researching his life has been my pet project during the past month as a result of viewing the 70-minute special.
Viewing that film made me realize how rare his TV appearances are in America since his death. Of course, the films for which he sang theme songs air quite regularly. But I guess I'm too young to remember any commercials he may have done.
I first became conscious of his death around 1986 when an oldies station played "Georgy Girl", and the disc jockey mentioned his passing in the previous year.
While his voice was very beautiful he often struck me as someone who looked and sounded 20 years older than he actually was--an apparent reflection of a difficult life.
I'd say he was just the person to replace Nat King Cole (with whom I share a birthplace) on the capitol records label. He had Nat's experience as a TV show host and noticeably some of his mannerisms.
But the parallels between his tragedy and nat King Cole's have struck me; both died of smoking related cancer in the same month, 20 years apart, they both had children who celebrated birthdays the month they died, and at least one of those children entered the same profession, both had a son who also died relatively young, years after they passed (source: wikipedia.com), and their performing children later had poignant tribute CDs in which their voices are morphed with their fathers' recordings.
Both men have legions of fans of differing generations who wish they hadn't been felled by their vices, as anyone can tell just by viewing this guestbook.
Hopefully they're in Heaven doing some slamming beyond slamming duets with each other and that their children are taking better care of themselves now for the sake of their many admirers, and if they should stray from a healthy routine, I hope their spirits of their fathers will find a way to reach from the Great Beyond and smack the instruments of their chosen vices clean out of their naughty little hands.

MessageI never tired of listening to this wonderful man's silky smooth voice throughout my childhood. The same is true today, and I'm 36.
My mother had the good fortune of seeing him perform live late in his career and, although obviously weakened by his illness, said he still brought tears to her eyes and people to their feet applauding for more.
I wish I'd had a chance to meet and talk to him.
Never an imitator, just an inspiration.

MessageI was in High School when Matt Monro passed away. But I was familiar with many of his recordings by that time.
Part of my childhood was spent in Hawaii (My Dad was in the Air Force), and I was wondering when Matt performed at the Ilaki Hotel.
If anyone can tell me, please post it on this page and I'll see it.

Thank you

MessageThe latest blatant mis-spelling of the greatest singer this country has produced,is on a flyer we received from Pontins at Pakefield.
They were advertising a weekend in December where one of the acts was cabaret with Chris Dean(leader of the fantastic Syd Lawrence Orchestra)singing MATT MUNROE.
Not MUNRO or MONROE but the full works MUNROE!
We sent the flyer back, asking for the flyer to be corrected!
Does this constant wrong spelling of the best singer in the world drive anyone else mad,or is it just me!

+++++++++++++++++++++

No, we totally agree!

MessageI am a musician, and have found myself playing Matt Monro's "Walk Away" over and over again. I think it is one of the best songs ever written.

Reading Matt's biography, I think he should take enormous credit for recognising that it was a much better Eurovision song than his own entry (even though his song did better) and for recording it and making it a big hit in an era that was dominated by groups like the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Animals and Hermans Hermits.

I also love some of his other songs like "Portrait of my Love" and "Born Free". I think a singer should not only be judged by his qualities as a singer - for which Frank Sinatra's tribute is unsurpassable - but also by the songs he chooses. A definite 10 out of 10.

MessageI am a little too young to appreciate Matt in his pomp, but I have lots of his re-issued cd's.
A voice that could hold a note for ever and then straight into the next line.

So he may be gone but he stall has fans from a different generation

MessageMatt Munro and my father Frank Brooker were friends and worked together on the London buses. Dad eventually became an inspector. We used to go to the seaside together with both familes in our dormobile. It would be great to be able to find out if the Munro family had any pictures from the times as Dad passed away many years ago. A further link to Matt Munro is that my mother (also passed away) worked in Decca records as a secretary and mentioned him a lot. If anyone knows how I can get in touch with any of the family I would be very grateful.

MessageWomen are like apples on trees. The best ones are at the top. Men don't want to reach for the good ones because they are afraid of falling and getting hurt. Instead they just get the rotten apples from the grounds that aren't good but easy to reach. So the apples on top think something is wrong with them, when in reality, they are amazing!... They just have to wait for the right man to come along.. The one who's brave enough to climb the top of the tree just to reach them...

I'm VERONICA S. CARAVEO, 40'something I'VE watched t.v. at t.v. Patrol on channel 2 tonyt and see Matt Monro Jr. announcing his lookin' for a wife....I'm available for sure!
kindly give my messages to him ASAP !!!and call me (632) 3665863/ 64 or my cellphone # (639) 0920 4359838 send my best regards and GOD BLESS!

MessageWhat can you say about the beautiful silky smooth voice of this man , he never fails to lift my spirits whenever i hear his voice. The differance between matt and the likes of sinatra ( who people keep comparing him too) is that matt could sing !.i usually listen to the likes of motorhead and iron maiden etc so this guy must have been damn good to get me hooked. One of the best......enough said.

MessageHear, Hear! to all of the heartfelt and tender remembrances of Matt Monro from the guestbook writers, especially to Carlos from S.F., with whom I agree wholeheartedly in that Matt was and is, in his recordings listened to even today, truly one of a kind. It's perhaps the clear British pronunciation of the language which begins to set him apart. Much more than that, I think, it is Matt Monro's "natural" way of bending a lyric, which causes him to deliver the words of a song more in the manner we ourselves would like to if we only could. Matt, thank you for bringing an extra measure of eloquence, taste, and sincerity to popular music. The music will never die in our collective consciousness. We yearn for another or others like Matt who can speak to the human heart.

MessageHello Friends,

I first heard Matt Monroe's majestic voice singing my favourite theme song "Born Free" when I was 5 or 6 years of age as I joyfully opened Christmas presents; a train set! Obviously, I hadn't known it was Matt singing, not until1989 when I spent a year on holiday in the Philippines, and a friend kept playing Monroe's greatest hits! The Filipinos have such a grasp of great & relevant music, which here in America one very rarely hears on the radio, so sad, the plague of over formatted American radio! We have so much yet enjoy so little. I think the folks in the U.K. are much better off in this regard, with more variety on radio I would imagine. Metro Manila FM radio plays everything all the time, and unabashedly!

I'm this moment listening to Matt singing "Yesterday" what a voice, filled with such light and ease of syncopation. By far, I find Matt's presence light & warm on the heart, compared to Sinatra, who's dark past unfortunately bore on much of his later recordings, akin to listening to someone with the heaviness of skeletons in his closet. All Sinatra seemed to sing about were broads and dice games. But not Mr. Monroe, he sang with an eloquence of lyrical inflection that is beyond description. He sang about life and its multi-faceted experiences. How I wish I could have enjoyed him live in concert. Matt Monroe was a genius, may he rest in peace. Season's Greetings Everyone!

Carlos Brenez

MessageFrom 1948 - when I was 7 - to 1962, I was raised in Hong Kong; and started my Broadcasting career there. We had an amateur hour competition on Radio Hong Kong. One of the winners was a young soldier doing his national service in HK. I never forgot him. What a voice! That was before he became world famous. I still think he had one of the smoothest voices I have ever heard.

MessageHello everyone. Looking good, great site, very informative, well done lads. I don't have time to look for myself so I am asking you guys and gals on here to help me. Can anyone tell me anything about Matt's bus driving career? According to his daughter it only lasted 3 months but it's something everyone remembers. Owning a site about bus driving, Matt already has a place within site but I'd like more info...I know he drove the number 27 but that's about it. Any help is welcomed! ema
